Installation and Set up Instructions for 'Cakewalk2Reason Ver1' Studioware Panels --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- by Simon Morton, 2002, http://www.simonmorton.freeserve.co.uk For Win 95,98,me,2000,NT and XP CONTENTS ======== INTRODUCTION FREEWARE INFORMATION INSTALLATION HUBI's LOOPBACK DEVICE AND MIDIYOKE CAKEWALK AND STUDIOWARE SETUP REASON SETUP TIPS AND TRICKS VENDOR INFORMATION DISCLAIMER AND WARRANTY INTRODUCTION ============ Cakewalk2Reason is a collection of studioware panels for Cakewalk versions 6 or above, which allow you to control Propellerheads Reason from Cakewalk and to record your changes in Cakewalk. This allows you to use Reason as a sound module. You can also sync Reason to the tempo of Cakewalk. Most functionality you have in Reason is available via the individual panels. This also means you have the advantages of running audio tracks in cakewalk as well as sequenced midi tracks with the superb sounds in Reason. Please follow the instructions carefully - setting up is straight forward once you know how! You will be very glad once it is set up! FREEWARE INFORMATION ==================== Cakewalk2reason is freeware - BUT many hours have gone into designing these panels and I am always saving up to buy new toys to make noise! If you use these panels AT ALL, please see below; ******************************************************************* ********** ********** ********** PLEASE VISIT ********** ********** ********** ********** HTTP://WWW.MP3.COM/SIMONMORTON ********** ********** ********** ********** and make a donation by buying ********** ********** a CD - THANKYOU VERY MUCH AND ********** ********** PLEASE ENJOY!!!! ********** ********** ********** ******************************************************************* A number of songs are available to download if you would like to listen. INSTALLATION ============ Unzip the file and copy the files directly into a directory of your choice. There is no installation routine and your registry is not affected. If you wish to uninstall, files can be simply deleted using Windows Explorer. HUBI's LOOPBACK DEVICE AND MIDIYOKE =================================== Important: You need some MIDI loopback installed to redirect Cakewalk's MIDI OUT to Reason. This can be Hubi's LoopBack device (Windows 95/98) or MIDI Yoke Junction (Windows 95/98 and NT/2000) or whatever you like. These are both freeware. Download Hubi's loopback from http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Hubis_LoopBack_device Download MIDI Yoke Junction from http://www.midiox.com Please follow the installation instructions carefully. Once you have installed ths, run the program. It will appear minimized in your menu bar. Right hand click on it and set LB4 as the 'input' and 'LB4' as the 'Output'. CAKEWALK AND STUDIOWARE SETUP ============================= Unzip and copy the panels to any folder you wish. Open Cakewalk. 1. Go to 'Tools\Midi Devices'. In the 'Output Ports' on the right hand side, highlight all the LB ports (if you installed MidiYoke, then select the MidiYoke ports) and click on 'OK'. In order to Sync Reason to Cakewalk and use controller searchback, you can use Cakewalk to transmit the midi timecode. 2. In Cakewalk go to 'Tools\Project options' and press the 'clock' tab. Set 'Source' to 'Internal' Set 'Ticks per quarter note' to 120 Set 'SMPTE/MTC Format' to '30 Frame Non-Drop' 3. Then, go to the menu 'Tools\Project options' and press the 'Midi Out' tab. Tick 'Transmit midi start, contnue, stop, clock'. Tick 'Transmit MIDI song position pointer (SPP)' Untick 'Zero controllers when play stops' Tick 'Patch/controller searchback Before play starts' 4. Panel set up; Go to 'file\open', find the panel you want and open it up. In the bottom left corner of each of the studioware panels there is the 'Track and Channel Chooser' section - set the Channel you wish to use in Cakewalk. By default I have set this to channel 1. Then, next to the channel selector, set the track you wish to use to record on. 5. Cakewalk setup; Go to the track view. Right hand click on track 1 and select 'Track properties' from the bottom of the menu. Select the 'Port' dropdown and choose the port you wish to send data from. For example, use 'LB4'. Then choose the channel you want - choose Channel 1 I would suggest setting track 1 use to Channel 1, and on the panel select the same in the 'Track and channel Chooser'. You must use a different track and channel if you want to control a differnt module in Reason. Cakewalk will now send CC messages and note information to Reason on Channel 1 from track 1 via LB4. REASON SETUP ============= 1. Open Reason, and go to the menu 'edit\preferences'. Under 'BUS A', press the dropdown menu and choose 'LB4' Under 'Remote Control', press the dropdown menu and choose 'LB4' Under 'Midi Clock Sync', press the dropdown menu and choose 'LB4' Click on OK. 2. Now, in the Reason Transport bar in the MIDI Sync box, click 'Enable'. In the 'MIDI in Device' (at the top of Reason), make sure the 'bus select' is set to 'A' (LB4 will appear in the little window to the right of this). OK, you should be ready to press play in Cakewalk - reason will start too. TIPS AND TRICKS =============== Remember to press the 'record button' on the cakewalk2reason Studioware panel and when you press play in Cakewalk. You can control Reason and record your tweeking by twiddling with Cakewalk2Reason Panels in Cakewalk. For More information on using studioware, see the help file in cakewalk. Some buttons are unavailable in the panels, as there is no facility in Reason to control the parameter externally. There is also an unknown problem with CC103 - it can cause midi feedback. I will be developing panels for Sonar2Reason in the near future. Some parts of some panels work in Sonar. Please remember, a lot of hours have gone into designing these panels and I am always saving up to buy new toys to make noise!
